Abrasive Jet Machining (AJM) is a machining process that uses tiny abrasive particles ejected at high speed from nozzle holes to act on the surface of the workpiece, grinding and removing material through the high-speed collision and shearing of the particles.

Abrasive jet in addition to surface treatment for surface finishing, including coating, welding and plating pre-treatment or post-treatment, in manufacturing, small machining points are very suitable for plate cutting, space surface polishing, milling, turning, drilling and surface weaving, indicating that the abrasive jet can be used as a grinding wheel, turning tool, milling cutter, drill and other traditional tools.

And from the nature or root of the jet, abrasive jet technology is divided into (abrasive) water jets, slurry jets, abrasive air jets and so on. Today, we will first talk about the development of abrasive water jet technology.

Abrasive water jet is developed on the basis of pure water jet. Water Jet(WJ) originated in the 1930s, one theory is to mine coal, another is to cut a particular material. In the early days, the pressure that water jet can reach is within 10 MPa, and it can only be used for flushing coal seams, cutting soft materials such as paper and cloth, etc. However, along with the development of science and technology, a variety of exciting new trends appeared in the field of international water jet in the end of the 1970s, representative of which is the Abrasive Water Jet(AWJ) proposed by Dr Mohamed Hashish in 1979.
